Standard Deduction For 2024 Tax Year Over 65. Section 63 (c) (2) of the code provides the standard deduction for use in filing individual income tax returns. The 2024 standard deduction for tax returns filed in 2025 is $14,600 for single filers, $29,200 for joint filers or $21,900 for heads of household.

The standard deduction for those over age 65 in tax year 2023 (filing in 2024) is $15,700 for singles, $29,200 for married filing jointly if only one partner is over 65 (or $30,700 if both are). For 2024, that extra standard deduction is $1,950 if you are single or file as head of household.
